STORYLINE OF ‘THE CROWN’

The Crown series is based on the life of personal and political events of Queen Elizabeth II from the 1940s until the early 21st century. The story depicts the reign of the Queen as she mounted the throne at the early age of twenty-five, after the death of his father, King George VI. The drama reveals the British Empire's political conspiracies, family disputes, and state affairs from past years to the public.

Peter Morgan, the producer and main scriptwriter of the drama, has masterfully disclosed Queen's journey. As a young girl, leading and ruling a sovereign British monarchy for the longest time. Let's take a quick overview of The Crowns- four seasons before moving to season five;

  •  Season 1 shows Elizabeth’s marriage to Prince Philip, Duke Of Edinburgh, in 1947. Winston Churchill resigned as a prime minister and Princess Margaret, the Queen’s sister, broke up with Captain Peter Townsend. Queen Elizabeth became queen in 1952.

  • Season 2 covers the Suez Crisis, while Anthony Eden retired and Harold Macmillan became the next prime minister in 1963.

  • Season 3 begins with Harold Wilson's period as a prime minister and ends with Elizabeth II's silver jubilee in 1952. Camilla Shand, a queen consort, was introduced.

  • Season 4 depicts Margaret Thatcher as the first female prime minister. Following the marriage of Prince Charles with Lady Diana, Princess of Wales.

The latest season of The Crown, now streaming on Netflix, is full of a scandalous storyline and becomes a hot-button for the viewers because of the controversial scenarios. The season covers the following chronicles of the early ’90s till Princess Diana’s death in 1947.

  • The season exposes the reality of royal marriages. As claimed by the Princess, “there were three people in this marriage” in an explosive, tell-all interview conducted by Panorama’s Martin Bashir that airs on BBC One. 

  • In 1992, The Prime Minister officially announced the divorce of Charles and Diana's marriage because of Charles' affair with Camilla. Later on, Camilla and her husband, Andrew, got divorced.

  • 'The Camilatapes' was another scandal that turned out soon after the separation of Charles and Diana. A six-minute recording of Charles and Camilla was leaked and published in the British tabloids

  • A reporter and biographer, Andrew Morton, publishes a book Diana: Her True Story - In Her Own Words, that states her marriage, her bulimia, her suicide attempts, and Camilla Parker Bowles.

  • The Sunday Times newspaper reveals the poll results that show the public favored Charles over Queen Elizabeth - encouraging Her Majesty to renounce the throne. The public foresight was ‘Queen Victoria Syndrome’ and believed Elizabeth should abdicate for her son.

WHAT IS ‘QUEEN VICTORIA SYNDROME?’

Episode 1 of season 5, titled Queen Victoria Syndrome, unfolds when Prince Charles references a poll that declares his popularity more than his mother among the public. 

Queen Victoria Syndrome describes that when the long-reigning monarch became aged and out-of-touch with the public, they thought that The Majesty should abdicate. But, the late Queen Elizabeth II, the longest-serving monarch, ignored the suggestion to surrender and shut down any Queen Victoria Syndrome.

 

THE CAST OF THE CROWN SEASON 5

Well, Season 5 has a new, all-star ensemble cast. So, let's take a look at the stars featured in Season 5;

  1. Imelda Staunton as Queen Elizabeth II: The Harry Potter star never disappoints; Imelda portrayed the Queen character with so much elegance and professionalism.

  2. Dominic West as Prince Charles: “Dominic West is entirely too hot to play Prince Charles” says Vogue. Since West has performed his role exceptionally well.

  3. Jonathan Pryce as Prince Philip: Numerous award winners, Jonathan has undoubtedly done justice to Prince Phillip’s character with his performance.

  4. Elizabeth Debicki as Princess Diana: The audience is very much in love with Debicki, calling her a “show stealer”!

  5. Olivia Williams as Camilla Parker Bowles: “When I was offered the role of Camilla Parker-Bowles, I couldn’t believe it,” says Olivia on her character. Also, she has done her job remarkably well.

  6. Jonny Lee Miller as Prime Minister John Major: The Trainspotting actor has become the internet’s latest crush after his exemplary role as PM.

  7. Humayun Saaed as Dr-Hasnat Khan: Pakistani heartthrob “Mere Pass Tum Ho” star is playing the lover of Princess Diana, and Saaed has got mixed reviews from his Pakistani fans on his character.

HUMAYUN SAEED ROLE IN THE CROWN SEASON-5

 

Pakistani filmstar, Humayun Saeed is playing the role of Dr. Hasnat Khan, a British-Pakistani heart surgeon, in season 5 of The Crown. The ‘London Nahi Jaunga’ star makes an appearance in the seventh episode, meeting Lady Diana in the hospital. Saaed played the love interest of Princess Diana, and they had a two-year relationship. On asking about his character, Humayun Saeed told variety: “I am confident audiences will love the simplicity of the relationship and how it is portrayed on-screen.”

Humayun Saeed has a huge fan following in Pakistan from exceptional roles in Dil Lagi, Jawani Phir Nahi Aani, and Bin Roye. But this time, it felt like his delivery was not up to the mark, and fans were disappointed by the choice of scene. Maybe it was the demand for the character since the fans back in Pakistan reacted to his character as there was some controversy on social media about the love scene between the doctor and Princess Diana.
