They say, “80% of the people in the world only wear 20% of their clothes”. Ever questioned why, despite having a tonne of clothing, you struggle to pull together an outfit every day? Or do you frequently wear the same few items because you just can't seem to find the proper combinations?
Well, in actuality, picking an outfit from a mound of clothing is a laborious task. The process is made more frustrating by the outcome, which is an item that doesn't fit, needs to be altered, or is too rough. Given this, organising your closet is a smart move.
Organising a closet has more benefits than making dressing less of a chore in the morning. Decluttering and organising the areas surrounding your home eliminates tension and transforms you into a person who looks forward to life. Here are some of the reasons why you should start organising your closet if not already;
You'll be able to make much better use of all of your apparel, if you don't wear your go-to pieces 90% of the time.
If how you carry yourself matters, don't you think how you keep your belongings matters as well? Consider what you will think of someone who maintains their stuff versus those who do not.
It will look and feel good.
Now that you know why organising your closet is crucial, allow me to give you some amazing tips to get the process started.
The challenge is knowing where to begin and how to go such that your wardrobe is clean, less chaotic, and highly functional. Well, I would advise trying to visualise how you want items in your wardrobe to look before touching them. The simplest method is to check for pictures of closets that are similar to yours for inspiration.
Create a vision board, then begin to implement it. If your vision board has too many organisers, it might be time to buy some more or use your DIY skills to create one. Similar to this, if your closet is small, learn hacks to modify anything in it.
If your closet is only a little disorganised, don't spread everything out; just sort and arrange everything in its proper place. Consider spreading each item out on the floor or your bed if your closet resembles a cramped clothing warehouse. Sort them into "keep," "giveaway," and "recycle" piles.
Give each dress its proper consideration by taking your time. Everything you are certain you will wear goes into the "keep" pile. Decide whether or not to keep any items you forgot you owned by trying them on.
The "giveaway" category is for dresses that are unwearable, don't fit, or aren't your style anymore. Divide it thereafter into the three subcategories of distribution, donation, and sale. Consider giving your better-fitting items to your younger siblings, cousins, or even pals. Let them know you've worn them before. All of your unwanted but wearable clothing should be donated, and you should sell any goods you think would do well.
Last but not least, keep in the recycle pile any stuff that could be used to make outfits for your kids or nieces and nephews. You can even make scrunchies, tote bags, pot holders, cleaning rags, and other things if you know how to sew.
TIP: Keep two baskets in or next to your closet. One is for alterations, while the other is for donations. For convenience, attach a tag to each one. Keep dresses that require modifications in the alteration basket, and think about donating some old ones if you purchase new ones. Remember to have your garments altered and donated regularly.
Set aside the donation and recycling piles. And then decide where you want to put each item in your "keep" pile. Suites can be kept on one side, while one-piece clothing such as shirts, dresses, pants, tights, and other items can be kept in various locations depending on where you can find them easily.
As soon as everything is put in its proper place, make a commitment to yourself that you will return everything to its original location after use or after laundry as a sign of appreciation for the service it provided.
TIP: Prepare 7 outfits for the week and hang them in the desired order. Wear each outfit a day without ditching. You'll use the majority of the goods in your closet in this manner.
You know you can save a whole lot of space if you just fold your clothes right. You'll be astonished to learn that if you fold your clothes neatly beforehand, you won't need to press the majority of them. Neatly folded clothes will make your wardrobe appear nice and clean.
TIP: Use the Japanese KonMari technique to rightly fold your clothes. It’s easy and efficient.
The purpose of organisers is to free up space for you, not for them. So, only invest in organisers that will actually fit in your closet. Purchase organisers specifically for your tights, scarves, and undergarments. Fold them nicely to fit in. Put your shirts on multipurpose hangers. Depending on your requirements, you can get creative with where and how you employ them.
TIP: Make your own organisers by DIYing packaging containers and save money.
I’m talking about off-season clothes. Your closet should only hold clothes that you need for the current season. Use vaccum bags or large containers and put everything that is not needed for the current season either in your store room, bed drawers, or on shelves mounted high above in your closet.
TIP: If you must travel, simply keep a few off-season clothing items in a drawer. Instead of opening everything back, it will be useful.
For shoes, ties and jewelry. Invest in good organisers, that fit everything and take up less space. Jewelry trays, watch cases, clear shoe cases, and handbag holders, among other items. This will make all the difference I assure you. You'll employ your possessions. It will be easy for you to match things just by having a clear sight of your belongings.
TIP: Use dedicated organisers, such as jewelry boxes for rings, bracelets, and necklaces, etc., for little items. Use a transparent, stackable shoe case that showcases your collection so you can see where each pair is.
After making this much work, think about doing the following to take your closet organisation to the next level.
Hangers are essential for determining the look of your closet. Invest in a single type of hanger, ideally velvet, so that your clothes won't slide off and your closet will look posh.
If you're using a basket, stick to one style, such as all wicker, all plastic, all metal wire, etc. Your closet will seem more elegant with uniformity. Invest in high-quality baskets to avoid having to replace them frequently.
Any such items that will make you feel better can be hung on the walls of your closet. Pictures of your favourite fashion icon or even inspirational quotes can be displayed in frames.
TIP: Be content with what you have and treat it with respect. You, your parents, or your spouse worked hard to earn the money you used to purchase these products.
We have all experienced the situation where we rip out the tags that poke a hole in our dresses since we couldn't find the damn scissors. Consider keeping a box of necessities in your closet that contains a pair of scissors, a lint brush, a needle and thread, some basic buttons, etc. to have on hand at all times.
Correctly organising your clothes takes time and effort but it is worthwhile. Simply said, start by grouping everything into heaps according to what you'll keep and where you'll store it. Keep tidiness and functionality in mind while you organise. Lastly, use your imagination and the additional hints and techniques from the article.
