BRAIN-BOOSTING BITES: 5 FOODS TO SUPPORT COGNITIVE HEALTH

A healthy brain helps us perform complex tasks, like solving a math equation, learning a new skill, or managing emotions. It’s also crucial for strong memory, efficient attention span and the ability to make logical decisions.

Oh and, you know, it keeps us ALIVE! So clearly, having good brain health is pretty important. And surprisingly, it’s not very high-maintenance. In fact, one of the advantages of a healthy diet is better brain function. So all you have to do, really, is eat good food. Need ideas? I’ve got some right here!  

 

5 FOODS TO SUPPORT COGNITIVE HEALTH

 

1- Nuts

Walnuts, almonds and pistachios are good for brain health. Walnuts contain antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. A recent study done by Abha Chauhan suggested that consumption of walnuts (1–2 oz per day)  improves cognitive function and reduces risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes.

On the other hand, almonds contain vitamin E, which is proven to improve memory and prevent cognitive decline. Pistachios also contain antioxidants which break free radicals and prevent oxidative stress in brain cells. 

 

2- Berries

Blueberries, strawberries and blackberries are not only delicious but are a great source of antioxidants. These candy-like fruits can be eaten with granola, oatmeal or even during study sessions. 

A study conducted by Marshall G. Miller and Barbara Shukitt-Hale in 2012, suggests eating berries prevents age-related brain degeneration, enhances neuroplasticity and improves cognition. 

 

3- Dark Chocolate

Who doesn’t love chocolates? But did you know that dark chocolate is better than other varieties? It has many health benefits, especially for the brain. Dark chocolate contains cocoa which is enriched with magnesium, protein, zinc and iron. 

Magnesium is linked to regulating our stress hormones, which in turn promotes good mental health. Likewise, prebiotics in dark chocolate promote growth of the good bacteria in the gut leading to better gut health. 

 

4- Fatty Fish

Fatty fish like salmon, tuna, and sardines are a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids. Your body is unable to produce the amount of omega-3 fatty acids that it needs. So, it is essential to eat food rich in these fatty acids. 

Omega-3 acids are vital for the brain. These are the building blocks of brain cells and nerves. Thus, enhancing memory and improving learning ability. Another benefit of these nutrients includes stabilizing mood and preventing depression. 

 

5- Eggs

Eggs may seem ordinary but they are one of the best foods to have for optimal brain health. They play a great role in improving memory, attention and learning. What's more, eggs can also reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease.
