Hair Care - Things You Might Be Doing Wrong

Have you tried those viral hair care routines? Even have taken supplements? But still, it feels like your hair is not getting the love it deserves. Let’s dive in and see what you might be doing wrong.

Determining your hair type:

Our hair has different porosities. Hair porosity refers to your hair’s ability to absorb and retain moisture, which can affect how your hair responds to products and treatments. They are:

  1. Low porosity: The cuticle layer is tight, which makes it hard for moisture to enter the hair shaft.

  2. Medium porosity: Hair with medium porosity has a healthy balance, absorbing moisture effectively.

  3. High porosity: the cuticle layer is open, so moisture enters quickly and escapes just as easily.

Conditions of Conditioning:

Hair conditioning is a crucial part of hair care. Did you know the different types and methods of it?

Types:

  • Hair oils

  • Hair serums

  • Hair masks

  • Chemical conditioners

Methods:

Simple Conditioning: Apply a conditioner after shampooing and then wash it off.

Reverse Conditioning: Apply conditioner before shampooing.

Leave-in: Apply conditioner on damp hair after showering without washing it off.

There’s no hard and fast rule but reverse conditioning works miracles for low-porosity hair by preventing the product build-up. Leave-in is best suited for high-porosity ones.

Warming:

It’s important to know that conditioners are absorbed more effectively when warmed. Using warmed oils, a heating cap, or applying conditioner during a steam bath could be the secret to better results. This method works especially well for low-porosity hair, as it helps open the cuticles for deeper penetration.

Can Less Be More?

Your hair might not need the quantities recommended in viral routines. It can weigh them down. It's better to start with a smaller amount, you can always add more if needed. The amount required depends on your hair's porosity. Remember, just because a product is viral doesn’t mean it’s right for your hair. Focus on what your hair truly needs.

Air Dry or Towel:

If you're still rubbing your hair vigorously with a towel, it’s time to ease up! Instead, gently wrap your hair in a microfiber towel or an old T-shirt to absorb moisture. Let your hair dry naturally, but a blow dryer can help speed things up if it takes too long. Just be sure to apply a nourishing hair serum first. And remember, you don’t need hot air—just the blow of air will do the trick to dry your hair effectively without damage.

Insufficient protein:

You may have tried supplements from the pharmacy, but if your diet lacks protein, nothing will truly help. Hair is made of a protein called keratin, and without enough protein, your hair can become weak, brittle, and prone to breakage.

Conclusion:

Hair is just like fingerprints, no two can ever be the same. That's why what works for others might not be for you. Your hair is like a child, requires a lot of care, and even when you give it everything, sometimes it still misbehaves. It takes patience to nurture it. So there will be days when, despite your best efforts, it might look messy, and that’s okay. Stop stressing, it's just part of the journey.
