She was a Muslim woman from Rajasthan and learned Urdu and Rajasthani dialects just for this movie. Other characters like Manoj Pehwa (Mimi’s father), Supriya Pathak (Mimi’s mother), and all other characters played significant roles in Mimi’s cast. The director of the film is Laxman Utaker, and the producer is Dinesh Vijan. It’s a remake of a 2011 Marathi film named Mala Aai Vhhaychy.
Shoot Location
Mimi was announced in August 2019 and started shooting in October 2019, with filming taking place in Rajasthan and Mumbai. It was released in 2011.
Plot Of the Movie
The movie has a unique plot. It is based on a couple who cannot conceive named John and Summer. They came to Rajasthan, India, searching for a surrogate mother for their child. There, they met a dancer and thought she was a perfect fit for their child. However, this woman was an emerging actress struggling for fame.
The couple asked the local taxi driver Bhanu Pratap Pandey to convince Mimi for surrogacy for U$25000. Mimi already wanted money but accepted this offer after some initial hesitation. The IVF procedure succeeded, and Mimi lied to her parents about going for a shoot in another city where she started living.
Her bump started becoming prominent, and seven months later, a scan discovered that the child is down’s syndrome. The couple returned to the US saying, Mimi should abort this baby and didn’t need him anymore. However, Mimi decided to bring the baby into the world.
With no other choice, she came back home and told her parents that the child belonged to Bhanu, causing more problems for him, whose wife lived in another city and hadn’t seen him for months. A healthy child was born, Raj, making people curious because he didn’t resemble his biological parents. Bhanu’s family also had similar problems.
Eventually, Mimi came clean from surrogacy, and her parents accepted. She became deeply attached to Raj and gave up her Bollywood passion for him. 4 years later, Raj was a grown-up child who was sometimes admired for his different looks and other times, got bullied in school.
After watching Raj and Mimi’s video on Facebook, John and Summer returned to take their biological son to America. Mimi confronted them, but they were ready to take legal action because the child didn’t belong to Mimi; she had signed the surrogacy contract. She decided to give Raj to John and Summer to keep child away from the courts.
The flight day arrived. And Mimi and her family came to hand Raj over to his parents. However, they got surprised after watching a child ‘Tara’ with the couple. They told her how after returning from Mimi’s house, they felt a connection with Tara, who was crying at an orphanage gate. They decided to adopt her and gave Raj back to Mimi.
Mimi Review
Mimi movie has a diverse review. Some people liked the humorous aspect of it. While some liked the storyline, it is a wonderful, heartwarming film covering many societal issues like single motherhood, Indian’s obsession with fair color, and gender discrimination, not accepting disabled children. Some say the movie itself is not a buddle of joy, but it is only to watch because of Mimi’s cast, especially Kriti Sonam’s acting.
Mimi on Netflix has a 3.25/5 rating. However, it has some inappropriate jokes about the burka, suspicious maulvi, broken Urdu, and namaz. Whether looking for a good film for a Sunday evening or something you can enjoy with your friends, Mimi is a movie to check out.
Conclusion
I have watched the movie, and it is incredible. I think it is worth a Sunday binge-watch. It teaches me that love has no boundaries. You can have genuine feelings and be ready to sacrifice your passion as Mimi did.
