Managing employees who have work-life conflicts as a HR Manager

Work-life conflicts are real and are not between two people. Instead, it is the discrepency between the personal life and work life of a person. The HR managers can help their employees dealing with work-life balance issues in the following ways:

      i.         Always asking the employees about their needs directly or indirectly via a survey.

ii.         Bringing awareness to employees about company-wide benefits such as health insurance that covers both physical and mental health.

iii.         Offering remote working to employees who have family issues and cannot visit office for some time.

iv.         Promote productivity instead of hours spent in office. Completion of tasks assigned through smart work must be encouraged.

     v.         Being considerate of employees by acknowledging that every employee is different from the other.

vi.         Walk breaks should be given after every 2 hours to refresh mind. Sitting constantly for hours or staring at the screen for so long decreases the efficiency and focus of a person.

vii.         Helping employees with disputes and differences.

viii.         By not giving too much work one day and less on the other. The tasks assigned should be not overloaded on a single person that they have to give over-time or complete the work at home. There should be a balance.

   ix.         Constantly motivating the employees.

     x.         More support for employees who are parents. Having a daycare in your organization where working mums can admit their kids and can also check up on them in their break.

xi.         Encouraging quality work by giving incentives. Examples: discounts at affiliated restaurants, free spa day, massage day, magazine subscription, and gym membership etc.

xii.         Reviews from employees.  Asking for their feedback and suggestions. This makes the employees feel that they have a say in the organization and their views are appreciated.

xiii.         Giving time management tips to employees in order to maximize their productivity. For more struggling employees small seminars should be held.

xiv.         Racism, sexism, classism, seniority complexes, superiority complexes etc. should not be entertained in the organization. As it is not only unethical but also effects the mental health of employees.

xv.         By ensuring that the employees take vacations that will improve their well-being and health.

xvi.         Maintaining peace at workplace. Rude employees creating hostile environment should be given warning about their behavior and actions. If needed they should be suspended.

xvii.         Assigning different types of tasks. Especially now that everything is done on screens. Digital off time is very necessary from these devices as prolonged use affects eyesight, mental health and some people even face headaches and migraine.
