Earth is uninhabitable and hope for humanity diminishes by the second. The hero is on a quest to save Earth and his loved ones from certain doom. Sounds familiar? This is what usually comes to mind when we think of a modern-day science fiction movie. The Midnight Sky on Netflix follows this classic storyline but is it worth the watch? Stay tuned and find out.

Let's set the stage. Augustine Lofthouse (played by two-time Academy Award winner George Clooney) is a reclusive scientist who is for lack of a better word married to his work. The year is 2049 and a deadly radiation blanketing the entire world is on a mission to kill all life here. Augustine is the last man standing.
A spaceship called the Aether is making its way back home after a successful mission to the planet K – 23. Augustine makes it his mission to warn them of the danger that awaits their return. But he is quite unpredictably joined by a young mute girl named Iris.
This is where the audience joins a terminally ill scientist and a mysterious mute girl on their journey across the Arctic to warn the Aether of the horrors at home.
This post-apocalyptic thriller has quite the cast. Let's take a look:
George Clooney as Augustine
Caoilinn Springall as Iris
Felicity Jones as Sully
Tiffany Boone as Maya
Ethan Peck as young Augustine
Sophie Rundle as Jean
The Midnight Sky does not leave a very lasting impression on the audience. Here is a list of reasons why:
The characters seem as cold and lifeless as the landscape where the movie is set. It creates a void, leaving much to be desired.
The storyline gets more and more confusing as we move towards the end. Instead of all the pieces finally coming together the story leaves loose ends everywhere.
Clooney's direction leaves a lot to be desired. It seems like he is so focused on telling the story of his character that he forgets to live it.
It doesn't have what it takes to make the audience completely invested. The whole thing feels more like a filmmaking exercise rather than a story. It has no momentum.
The storyline has a lot of potential. It leaves a bittersweet taste in the mouth of the audience as it brings back a lot of memories from other great science fiction movies of our time. The plot was there, as well as the potential, but the execution was just not enough.
In theory, The Midnight Sky looks like a great idea, but the execution could not have been poorer. The Midnight Sky review on Rotten Tomatoes reads, " The Midnight Sky lacks the dramatic heft to match its narrative scale, but its flaws are often balanced by thoughtful themes and a poignant performance from director-star George Clooney.” read critic reviews here
