The Science Behind Mindful Eating

The Science Behind Mindful Eating: How It Can Improve Your Health

Mindful and healthy eating are terms you might often come across on social media. But what is mindful eating? Why is it important? And most importantly what effect does it have on our health? To answer the first question, mindful eating is the act of being aware of what you eat, how much you eat, and what the food makes you feel. Interesting, right?

The answer to the second question is that mindful eating teaches that any type of distraction while having your meal can be damaging to your health.

Ways In Which Mindful Eating Improves Your Health

Here I'll be answering your third and final question. How does mindful eating affect our health? Let's have a look:

1. Maintaining Stress Levels of The Body

The functions of our body are controlled by hormones. One such hormone is known as cortisol. Did you know that cortisol is also known as “stress hormone”? It regulates the stress levels of the body. Studies show that mindful eating has a great impact on lowering cortisol which in turn reduces the stress levels of the body.

The human body responds to different types of stress like; acute, chronic, and traumatic stress. Hence, eating mindfully and lowering the stress and anxiety levels of the body is beneficial to your health.

2. Helps in Digestion

Mindless eating has a huge impact on the stress levels and digestion of the body. In the modern world, it is not unusual to see a person be distracted while they eat. This distraction has great negative effects on your body. The body perceives this distraction as stress to the digestive system.

Mindful eating also supports the body's “rest-and-digest stage”. Listening to your body and being aware of all your senses while eating aids in digestion. It helps you steer clear of any illnesses.

3. Binge Eating and Weight Gain

Binge eating and weight gain are two terms that are often seen with each other as one directly impacts the other. Binge eating is often the result of an emotional day or just the body giving in to the large amounts of stress. Binge eating also results when you don’t pay attention to the food or the amount of food. This proves itself as weight gain.

When you become aware of the food you eat and respond to the body's hunger cues. It automatically results in eating a controlled portion and avoiding binge eating. Which in turn also prevents weight loss.

4. Healthy Diet

The advantages of a healthy diet are not lost on anyone. Being mindful of what you eat helps you in making better food choices. These choices result in a healthy body.

Conclusion

Mindful eating is a lifestyle that should be adopted by everyone. People often look at healthy eating tips for weight loss, weight gain, muscle gain, or due to several other health concerns. But what is often forgotten is the fact that eating healthy for a month or two won't make much of a difference. Adopting a certain lifestyle and then living by it, is what will make you healthy in the long run. And mindful eating is a good place to start.
